Primeros pasos: be, pronombres y sustantivos
Al terminar podrás usar am, is y are, elegir entre there is y there are según el sustantivo y poner siempre un sujeto, como it en It rained.
El verbo to be significa ‘ser’ o ‘estar’ y en presente tiene tres formas: am con I, is con he, she, it (o un sujeto singular, como my mom) y are con you, we, they (o un sujeto plural, como my parents). En la negativa se agrega not, y en la pregunta be pasa antes del sujeto. La edad también se dice con be: I am sixteen (years old), no I have sixteen.
| Sujeto | Afirmativa | Negativa | Pregunta |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | I am (I’m) tired. | I am not (I’m not) tired. | Am I late? |
| he / she / it | She is (she’s) at school. | She isn’t at school. | Is she at school? |
| you / we / they | They are (they’re) cousins. | They aren’t cousins. | Are they cousins? |
Para decir ‘hay’ no se usa have: se usa there is con un sustantivo singular o incontable (There is a park near my house) y there are con uno plural (There are thirty students in my class). Mira el sustantivo que sigue: en There are a lot of trees, el sustantivo es trees.
En inglés toda oración necesita un sujeto. Cuando el español no lo tiene, como al hablar del clima, la hora o la distancia, se usa it: It is cold today (‘Hace frío hoy’), It rained all night (‘Llovió toda la noche’), It’s six o’clock (‘Son las seis’).
Completa el mensaje con is, are, there are o it.
“Hi Sofía! My family and I are in Santa Marta. Our hotel (1) ___ near the beach, and (2) ___ two swimming pools. My parents (3) ___ very happy. This morning (4) ___ was very hot, so we swam all day!”
Espacio (1): el sujeto es our hotel, una sola cosa que equivale a it. Se usa is: Our hotel is near the beach.
Espacio (2): la idea es ‘hay dos piscinas’. Lo que hay, two swimming pools, está en plural, así que va there are.
Espacio (3): el sujeto my parents es plural y equivale a they. Se usa are: My parents are very happy.
Espacio (4): se habla del clima (‘hacía mucho calor’). En español no hay sujeto, pero en inglés hace falta it: it was very hot.
(1) is, (2) there are, (3) are, (4) it.

Ejercicio 2
Complete the conversation. A: “Excuse me, what time is it?” B: “___ half past six.”
Traducir ‘hay’ con have: Have many students in my school.
Usa there is con singular y there are con plural: There are many students in my school.
Omitir el sujeto como en español: Is very cold today o Is raining.
Pon it para el clima, la hora y las distancias: It is very cold today. It is raining.
Decir la edad con have: I have sixteen years.
La edad va con be: I am sixteen (years old). She is fifteen.
I am; he, she, it is; you, we, they are. La edad también va con be: I’m 16.
There is + singular o incontable y there are + plural significan ‘hay’; nunca uses have.
Toda oración en inglés tiene sujeto: con el clima, la hora y las distancias, usa it.
